Hurricane Preparedness for your Family and Home
May 05, 2011

We are approaching the beginning of the hurricane season for Houston and surrounding areas. Trendmaker Homes wants to assist you in being as prepared as possible in the event that we have a hurricane hit our area.

As we are now fully aware, there can be a great amount of destruction caused by the winds, rain, hail, water that accompany a hurricane. Therefore, to have yourself and your home fully prepared for such an occurrence, Trendmaker would like to offer you information that we consider to be important.

One of the first actions you should perform is to prepare an Emergency Supply List for yourself and your family, including your pets. Go to  www.ready.gov and you will find information on recommended items to include in a basic emergency supply kit. Along with the supply kit, there is also information on developing several plans for action if a hurricane hits the area. There is a family communication plan, a plan for staying put and “sheltering in place” during the storm, and a plan for leaving the area with a specific destination for everyone. All of this information is available to you on the above noted website. Please take the time to investigate and make the necessary preparations.

In making preparations for you and your family, you also need to prepare your home for the hurricane or “named weather event” as it is referred to by meteorologists. There are windstorm panels/shutters available that can be purchased and then installed on the windows of your home to protect them from wind and flying debris. While Trendmaker does not endorse or recommend any specific panel/shutter company, listed below are three websites for your information on the windstorm panel/shutters: www.wayne-dalton.com/Fabric-Shield.asp, www.dandcstormsolutions.com, or www.windstormwindowpanels.com.
If you already have the windstorm panels/shutters, then you should make the necessary preparations to have them installed in a timely manner prior to the storm.

The final information you need to be aware of prior to a hurricane or a tropical storm with their gale force winds and heavy rains is that any damage to your home by these storms is not covered under the warranty on your home with Trendmaker. Therefore, if your home should incur damages, you need to contact your insurance company or arrange for the repairs.
